Our Ethos
Hyesun House (hey-sun haus) is an exploration of Korean tradition. While makgeolli is the oldest alcoholic beverage in Korea, it is largely unknown and unavailable in Western markets. Hyesun House blends modern style with centuries of wisdom to bring makgeolli to the masses.
Our Origin
Stephen was born in Jinhae, South Korea, and came to the USA at a young age through an adoption process. In 2010, he reunited with his Korean family after more than 25 years of separation.
Hyesun was his yeodongsaeng (younger sister) who passed away from suicide in 2015. She was full of life and enjoyed connecting with loved ones over freshly brewed makgeolli. Hyesun House is an attempt to honor her story.
Our Commitment
After Hyesun’s death, Stephen learned that Korea leads the developed world in suicide rate and that suicide is the leading cause of death among young Koreans. A portion of our profit goes to organizations dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health issues in the global Korean community.
